Recently, the top ten sources of consumer complaints were as follows, according to the NACAA:

1. Automobile Sales. This category of complaints includes misleading advertising, undisclosed collision damage, and "lemon law" issues.

2. Home Improvement. In 2000 and 2001, home improvement contractors were named as the type of business most likely to go out of business and reopen under another business name. Beware!

3. Automotive Repairs. Typical consumer complaints involve problems with manufacturers or dealers, cost overruns, and "ghost" repairs.

4. Credit. This category includes predatory mortgage lending and payday loans.

5. Advertising/Telemarketing. Included in this category are deceptive advertising practices, mail order fraud, and bait and switch tactics.

6. Collections/Billing Practices. Watch out for incorrect credit reports and billing errors.

7. Household Goods. Complaints involve defective goods and failure to honor warranties.

8. Internet/E-commerce. Buying over the Internet? Deal with reputable companies only.

9. Cable/Satellite. This category also includes problems with cell phones, including billing complaints.

10. Landlord/Tenant. This category includes health and safety issues such as "black mold."
